Australia’s healthcare system is trialling artificial intelligence to reduce administrative burdens in general practice, as clinics face growing staff shortages and rising patient demand.

Melbourne-based start-up Heidi Health has launched an AI scribe system that automatically generates clinical notes during patient consultations. The technology is currently being tested in New South Wales through a pilot programme backed by the Primary Health Network, a government-funded health body.

The AI listens during appointments and produces draft notes in real time, aiming to reduce the time doctors spend on clerical tasks. The technology allows general practitioners to review and edit the notes before they are finalised in patient records.

“We are putting humanity back into healthcare,” said Dr Thomas Kelly, chief executive and co-founder of Heidi Health. “Doctors regain valuable time to build genuine patient connections.”

The trial comes as Australia’s telehealth sector expands, with clinics adopting digital tools to improve efficiency. Analysts have pointed to the potential for AI scribes to help address structural workforce pressures, particularly in rural areas where GP shortages are most acute.

Government health officials have expressed cautious optimism about the initiative, describing it as a possible model for tackling burnout among frontline healthcare staff. However, experts have also stressed the need for proper oversight to ensure the accuracy of clinical records and fairness in patient care.

The pilot programme, which began in June, is set to run into next year. Early feedback from participating clinics has been broadly positive, according to organisers.

If successful, the use of AI scribes could be expanded nationally as part of wider efforts to modernise healthcare delivery and alleviate pressure on medical professionals.
