Can AI Make Virtual Care Feel More Personal?

Australia’s telehealth sector is entering a new phase as artificial intelligence begins to shape how virtual care is delivered. A partnership between Amigo, an AI healthcare start-up, and Eucalyptus, one of the country’s largest digital health providers, aims to make remote consultations more efficient and accessible.

Announced in mid-2025, the collaboration introduces an AI assistant named June across Eucalyptus’s network of virtual clinics. The tool manages routine patient interactions, books follow-up appointments, and supports clinicians between consultations, allowing medical staff to focus on complex cases.

According to company data, June can complete most patient conversations autonomously, with fewer than 2 per cent requiring escalation to a clinician. While the figures have not been independently verified, they highlight potential productivity gains at a time when Australia’s healthcare system faces staff shortages and rising demand for telehealth.

“We’re using AI to extend care, not replace it,” said an Eucalyptus spokesperson. “Our goal is to support clinicians while keeping patients engaged around the clock.”

Amigo’s software integrates with clinical record systems to streamline documentation and monitor patient progress. The companies said future updates could enable earlier detection of health issues, offering proactive intervention through automated alerts.

Industry analysts view such partnerships as an early example of how automation could scale digital care across Australia’s dispersed population. However, the growing use of AI in healthcare is expected to attract regulatory attention, particularly regarding data privacy and accountability. Both companies said they comply with national privacy laws and plan to maintain transparency as the technology evolves.

Market analysts estimate Australia’s telehealth industry will continue expanding rapidly, with AI deployments likely to accelerate adoption. For Amigo and Eucalyptus, the venture signals an effort to balance innovation with clinical oversight, combining automation with human expertise to shape the next stage of digital healthcare delivery.
