Cancer recovery in Australia is getting a digital makeover. Deakin University’s TeleCARE programme, backed by nearly A$2 million in new government funding, aims to help survivors rebuild their strength from home. The scheme focuses on a common but under-addressed problem: persistent fatigue after treatment.

TeleCARE provides patients with live exercise coaching, nutrition tips and recovery advice via telehealth. Group video calls offer support and encouragement, while clinicians tailor care plans in real time. “TeleCARE aims to empower survivors to take charge of their recovery while reducing the burden on healthcare systems,” says Robin Daly, who leads the project at Deakin.

The programme reflects a wider shift towards virtual care. In May, Ramsay Health Care partnered with Bupa to expand digital rehabilitation, and Sonic HealthPlus is increasing telehealth access through Medicare’s permanent funding scheme. Together, these moves signal the growing importance of remote care in Australia’s health system.

Formal results from TeleCARE’s trial are not yet available, but early signs are encouraging. High participation rates suggest strong demand, especially in regional areas where medical specialists are scarce.

Some obstacles remain. Older patients, who often struggle with technology, may find virtual programmes harder to access. Yet health providers are trying to bridge the gap by simplifying digital tools and offering more community support.

TeleCARE may be just a trial, but it points towards a future where home-based recovery becomes the norm, reducing pressure on hospitals while offering more personalised care. Other countries will be watching closely.
